Ramblings at Dusk
What a privilege we received this evening when out on a twilight forest walk with our canine companion Asia, whose adventures many of you will have heard of or read about. She was as usual sharing our experiences, injecting them with her own brand of humour, geared to making us laugh at her amusing, some may say, egocentric, antics, when suddenly a “hush” appeared in the forest, creating a silence so profound, we felt as though we could hold it in our hands forever; Asia stopped dead on the spot, turning her head to the left and pricking her ears forward, with eyes widening in awe at the sight that beheld her, perfectly understandable I immediately realised, for upon turning my head slowly to look in the same direction, I saw it too. A sight which took my breath away, leaving it shimmering and trembling like a gossamer web, in the rapidly growing dusk of the forest. A full grown Roe Stag stood posing, showing himself in all his splendour, his proud head turned to link minds with these humans who had invaded his territory, bearing no grudge at our intrusion, and showing no fear, merely a friendly curiosity as to who we were and what we were doing on “his” land. As silently as I could, I conveyed to Caz, in the process of taking with his extremely sophisticated camera phone, a photograph of the moon in it’s full glory, the fact that the Stag was stood to his left, resplendent in the light of the moon, whose colours seemed to blend and flow with his own proud Energy and coat colour. Caz slowly turned his head, and carefully raised his camera to encapsulate those amazing moments for ever, down through the annals of time; he took a photograph, as I silently with my mind, gestured to Asia to stand perfectly still and quiet, which she duly did, rising to the occasion as only she can do. As Caz clicked the shutter capturing the Stag’s proud stance, there was a noise from a path to our left, and suddenly, from out of this little used woodland track burst two cyclists, the last thing we expected to see! The Stag shot forward, towards a curving track meandering away to our right, deep into the heart of the dense forest. That was that, we thought ruefully, but, living in hope, we moved gingerly forward in the direction the Stag had taken, only to find that the track although winding, was not as dense as we had first perceived; with mounting excitement, we cautiously and quietly continued forward down the path, with dusk falling around us; it was magical! I strongly felt the Stag was still in close proximity to us, and cautioning Asia once more to be as silent as she could, with heart in mouth I stood in the velvet cloak of the twilight, and was able to locate the Stag’s position; he had crossed the path into fields beyond, and as my eyes became more accustomed to the rapidly polarising light, I saw him, looking directly at me from some ten metres away. He then did the most extraordinary thing; he “performed” for us; firstly trotting along with a high stepping gait not unlike that of a horse in “extended trot”, then stopping he turned his head as if to offer us his “best side” to photograph; this Caz did despite the rapidly fading light. Next, the Stag displayed his paces, in the form of high bounces, leaving the ground with all four legs, only to return to earth and spring again, reaching higher and higher each time he bounced; it was incredible and awe inspiring to watch the sheer power of this wonderful creature, as he covered the ground as though wearing seven league boots, coming to earth with a very definite thudding sound, seemingly at odds with his grace and power. We quietly followed him, we three on the pathway, and him travelling parallel to us in the adjoining field, stopping and turning his head at intervals, as if to say “come on slow coaches, keep up!” This we duly did, until with a final bounce and a flick of his short bobbed tail, he vanished like autumn mist, leaving us awestruck, feeling privileged beyond measure at what had taken place this night The Animal/Human Interlink certainly showed us as it has numerous times before, that there is no separation between Animals and Humans; we are indeed “one” We proceeded to wend our way homeward, full of quiet joy and contentment, taking the Energy of the Stag and our moonlight ramblings into our lives, to enrich them forever, beyond measure.
